An original Uchiwa Hana I pendant light designed by Ingo Maurer and produced by Design M, Germany, circa 1970.
Part of Maurer’s celebrated Uchiwa series, the design was inspired by traditional Japanese hand fans and exemplifies the designer’s exploration of lightness, craftsmanship, and organic form. Constructed from paper, bamboo, textile, and metal, the lamp unfolds into a sculptural floral composition that functions equally as illumination and as a work of art.
This example is distinguished by its exceptional state of preservation. The paper elements remain remarkably intact with excellent color and integrity, while the bamboo structure and original textile diffuser retain their original character. Examples of the Hana I are increasingly difficult to source, particularly in such well-preserved and largely untouched condition. The lamp features its original adjustable suspension system, allowing the hanging height to be altered according to the interior and ceiling height.
