Pair of Model 54 lounge chairs designed by Gae Aulenti for Knoll International in 1975.

These chairs perfectly capture Aulenti’s architectural approach to furniture. Bold, modern, and distinctly sculptural. Featuring lacquered black tubular steel frames with soft newly upholstered cushions, the chairs combine structural clarity with luxurious comfort. The continuous curves of the frame create a strong graphic presence, while the supple striped upholstery adds warmth and depth. Aulenti’s Model 54 chairs reflect her transition from the playful Locus Solus series of the 1960s to the more refined, postmodern language of the 1970s
