Artona Cabinet in Walnut Burl and Cognac Leather, Afra & Tobia Scarpa, Maxalto, Italy, circa 1975
An exceptional and rare cabinet from the celebrated Artona collection designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto, Italy, circa 1975. Introduced as Maxalto’s inaugural collection, Artona marked a return to traditional craftsmanship through the use of fine hardwoods, luxurious leather, and meticulous detailing, establishing the identity of the newly founded high-end division of B&B Italia. This example features a beautifully figured walnut burl top with the distinctive rounded overhang and signature string inlays that define the Artona series. The pair of doors are upholstered in cognac saddle leather with the original leather loop pulls passing through brass escutcheons, creating a refined contrast between warm timber and supple leather. The sculptural proportions and impeccable detailing exemplify the Scarpas’ mastery of combining architectural form with luxurious materials. Unlike the more commonly encountered black leather versions, this cabinet is finished in the rarer cognac leather, lending the piece a warmer and more elegant character
